Mid Vermont Council Rules

2002-2003

Race Skis

As of October 2002, the one-ski rule was rescinded. Racers may use more than one pair of skis.

Start Order

Lists supplied by each club, in a predetermined club rotation will seed the first two races. Example: Killington skier1, Pico skier1, Okemo skier1, and so on until each team's top skier is listed. Then Killington skier2, Pico skier2, etc. until all skiers are listed.

The third and consecutive Mid-VT races shall be seeded by the competitors' ranking for the series, based on the accumulated "place points" received for all the races to date. The top five ranked competitors start position shall be reversed. Racer # 5 shall start first, # 1 shall start 5th.

The second run shall be seeded the same as the first run.

In most races, the girls will run first. However, two races are typically designated with the boys starting first. Check the Mid-VT schedule for these races.

Points

Jr. IV & V place points are as follows: Each race will have a potential of three place points (1st run, 2nd run, and combined time) for a total of 21. The Mid-VT. Team will be determined using the best 9 place points. In the case of a tie, the next best place point will be used to break the tie. The lower the points, the better the ranking. However, the skiers that do not finish either the 1st or 2nd run, will only score place points for the run they finish. (They would not have completed 2 runs to compile a combined time).

Registration

Clubs/Coaches are responsible for entering their racers in all Mid-VT races.

Entry fees are $15.00 payable at all race registration sites the morning of the race.

Awards

Awards will be presented to the top 10 JIV girls and boys, and the top 5 JV girls and boys. Beginning with the third race, the boy and girl that move up the most from their start position will receive the "Attack from the Back" award.

10. The Mid-VT "Bean Pot" is a traveling team trophy decided by the place points of the top 4 racers (boys and/or girls) from each team. Lowest points own the "Bean Pot" for the week.

Mid-VT Team

A "Mid-VT Team" will be chosen following the last Mid-VT race. The ranking from all the Mid-VT races contested will determine the 50 best boys and girls. The Mid-VT Team will represent the Mid-VT council at the state championship series. The ratio of boys to girls will be determined by the ratio of boys to girls in the overall Mid-VT field.

Specific Notes

  1. The most important change for the upcoming season is the change in the quota system for qualifying for VARA Championship events from being "X" per Council to the more rational figure based on participation. For example, the total field size of 150 for the J4-5 VARA Championships will be divided by each Council's race participation. For details of the breakdown please refer to Rules List.
  2. The other important change this year will be the demise of the "one ski rule" for J4-5's. There will no longer be restrictions placed on J4-5 athletes regarding how many skis they choose to use throughout the season.
  3. Entry fees will remain at $15 for MVC technical events and $20 for the Okemo GS camp and race.
  4. While SGS remains on the J4 VARA Championship schedule qualifying J5's will not be able to participate.
  5. All MVC J3,4,5 races must be USSA sanctioned, have a "legal" jury in place, and file with VARA a Technical Delegate report.

Development:

  1. To participate in MVC Development races a child must be 6 years old by USSA standards (before Dec 31).
  2. It is recommended that the host site notify attending clubs a week in advance of the details of the event, i.e. registration locale, start time, race trail, etc.
  3. A Development racer may only "race up" to J4-5 races twice.

J4-5 Racing:

  1. Boys will run first at Ascutney and Pico this season.
  2. Once again Okemo will be hosting the Intro to Speed Camp and GS Race on February 23. There will be a quota based on field size and participation will be taken from the current place point list. Place points will be awarded depending on how many "race runs" are taken, 1 for 1 run and 2 for 2 runs. There wouldn't be a combined point awarded.
  3. The MVC Team will once again be picked at the Suicide 6 race based upon 9 of 20 place points if all races are held as scheduled. The number of Team members will be determined at a later date by J4-5 State participation.
  4. It is recommended that the VARA website be referred to with more statewide J4 & J5 Rules.

J3 Racing:

  1. Boys will run first this season at Suicide 6 and Middlebury.
  2. The J3 Eastern Series continues this season with events at Okemo and Whiteface, NY. Qualification for Okemo is from last season's results and will be named from the VARA office. The Whiteface event will be picked from the percentage of J3 statewide athletes relative to MVC J3 racers. Once again, check for further explanation at J3 Rules.
  3. There will no longer be a "J3 Qualifier" to pick automatics to the J3 Olympics at Sugarbush this season. Each Council will be awarded 5 automatic slots to be awarded from the place point list.
  4. The MVC Team will be picked at Killington on Feb 22 and will based once again on statewide J3 participation. 8 of 19 (depending on Okemo's SGS race) place points will be used.
  5. New this season is the J3 Shootout at Suicide 6 for those athletes not qualifying for the J3 VARA Championships at Okemo. All eligible J3's will go to Suicide 6 on Feb 23 for a "dual event" to qualify 15 (gender split) athletes to the VARA Championships.
