2005-2006 NORTHERN VERMONT COUNCIL J5&6 RULES

AGE GROUP: Racers may not have turned eleven before January 1, 2006. A J4 may race in J5 races at coach's discretion. They must be clearly marked as a J4 on the entry list. If they finish in the top 20 or above, they must move up to J4 races. They are not eligible for prizes. PLEASE NOTE J4s ON ALL ENTRIES AND RESULTS. A J5 wishing to race in a J4 race must win three runs of J5 races, either in the current season, or the previous season, be an outstanding athlete that stands above the rest of the field and the head coach of that program must have the approval of 4 other head coaches from the NVC. If a head coach is not familiar with that athlete, they will appoint a coach from that level who is competent to make that decision. If a J5 has two J4 race starts they must race the rest of the season as a J4.

MEMBERSHIPS: All J5 & J6 racers must be members of USSA (Youth Competitor) and VARA. Membership cards will be checked at races.

RACES:Races will be run according to USSA/VARA/NVC Rules, with the exception of the binding release rule and receiving outside help rule, if it is in the context of assisting a racer who is having difficulty putting a ski back on and the race will be unduly delayed without help from a course official, parent or coach. Each host area should make arrangements prior to race day to get a visiting J5 coach to act as the Technical Delegate (TD) for their race. The TD is responsible for ensuring a jury is formed and the race follows the appropriate rules, particularly safety rules. Please designate properly constituted race jury on the start order. GS SUITS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT THE J5/6 LEVEL.

  • Entries: Send or fax an entry list so that the host club receives it Monday prior to the race. ***A list of coaches must accompany your entries. *** Host areas are under no obligation to provide coaches with skiing privileges if the list is not provided. Send the list to the club address on the Council mailing list.
  • Entry Fees: Regular season council races will have no entry fees.
  • Seeding: Seeding will be done by random draw, with J6s first then J5s, and the second run order will be reversed bib order within each class. Each club must send or fax a list of racers to the host club Monday prior to the race (coaches list must also be faxed). All races will be seeded randomly with the order reversed for the second run. First run the J6 girls will run, then J6 boys, then J5 girls, then J5 boys. Second run will run reverse bib order for all the J6's first, and then reverse bib order for the J5's. Racers from other age groups must be clearly marked on running orders and results.
  • Guests: Guests at Northern Vermont J5&6 races will be seeded in the middle of the field. The host club must be contacted prior to seeding, (Monday prior to the race) with names of participating guests. The guests must be clearly noted on all results, start lists, etc.
  • Course Setting: USSA Licensed Officials must set the course. J5& 6 courses should be rhythmical with lots of open gates. Slalom course setting should be very simple using Stubbie gates if possible. There are no under gates allowed in either giant slalom or slalom. Vertical combinations are only allowed in J5 (excluding Town meeting day race at Cochran's) slalom courses, but not in giant slalom.
  • Results: Results must be printed by run. Please fax (or email) a copy of the results to the Stowe Reporter, and post the results file(s) on the VARA website by 12-noon on Tuesday following the race. Please also send one copy to each club, unless you are able to print them all out on the day of the race.
  • Prizes: Responsibility of the host club. Awards will be given to the top 10 boys and 10 girls, J5 & J6, for each run. Medals must have places (4th) engraved on them.
